Washed Away: An Exhibition

The Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA) presents a unique exhibition of work dealing with change from both environmental and personal perspectives, delving into how constant change impacts the world as we know it, or used to know it. The exhibition will be held at Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square, in downtown Portland, from May 2 to June 28, 2025.

Noted art curator, critic, and author, Carl Little, recipient of the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award in art writing by the Rabkin Foundation, has juried the show. GreenClean Maine is our show sponsor. Judith Greene-Janse is the Chairperson.

An artists’ reception is scheduled for Friday, May 2nd from 5 to 8 pm. 

Carl Little will give a gallery talk about curating the show on Friday, June 6th, 5:30 PM.

Last winter a combination of rising temperatures in the Gulf of Maine combined with king tides and powerful storms, resulting in profound upheaval for many Mainers. Most scientists agree that severe weather and warming sea waters are the result of our current climate emergency, and in the Gulf of Main we witness the impact on our own shores and ways of life. We saw iconic structures—docks, homes and businesses—devastated by multiple “100 year” storms in a single season, and yet the resilient spirit of Mainers rose as strong as the tides, to clear away, repair, and come together. As we continue to face the realities of our troubled planet, what will be lost? What may remain or be saved? WASHED AWAY offers visitors an opportunity to explore these challenging and complex issues through the eyes of Maine painters, sculptors, printmakers, collagists, video artists, book artists, and photographers.
